ANPEL Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) Columns are designed for the separation of molecules based on their hydrodynamic volume in solution. The product range includes aqueous-compatible silica-matrix SEC columns for biological molecules and highly cross-linked polymer-matrix GPC columns for synthetic polymers.
Unlike interaction-based chromatography modes, size-exclusion chromatography separates analytes without relying on chemical retention. Large molecules that are completely excluded from the stationary-phase pores elute first, while smaller molecules that penetrate the pores elute later. Selecting the appropriate matrix material, pore size, and solvent compatibility helps laboratories achieve reliable molecular-weight distribution analysis.

Choose the Right SEC or GPC Column

Column selection begins with the solubility of the sample and the required mobile phase. For water-soluble biomolecules and hydrophilic polymers, select an aqueous SEC column such as the CNWGel or Athena SEC series. For synthetic polymers requiring organic solvents such as THF, DMF, or chloroform, select a polymer-matrix GPC column such as the CruxPoly, ElfPoly, or Bio-Beads series.
After confirming solvent compatibility, select a column with a pore size and exclusion limit that matches the expected molecular-weight range of the sample. If the sample contains molecules larger than the maximum pore size, those molecules will be excluded and elute together at the exclusion limit, reducing separation resolution for the high-molecular-weight fraction.

Select the Appropriate Column Format

SEC and GPC separations rely entirely on the pore volume within the column, meaning that longer columns or multiple columns connected in series are frequently used to increase resolution. Choose the column length and internal diameter according to the required resolution, available analysis time, and system flow capabilities. Always verify that the system pressure limits and connecting tubing are compatible with the selected column configuration.
